Trialling a new rig

June 1, 2013

After a few months of building and rowing two more skiffs have been added to the growing fleet!

Both of these are full sailing versions, one with the spritsail rig and the other with a roller furling rig adapted from the “Hobie Adventure Island” craft.

The furling rig is a treat – very easy to handle, higher aspect than the spritsail and at 5.3m^2 ample power to drive the skiff. The furling gives the added ability to shorten sail very quickly as conditions freshen and although the rig, when unshipped, overhangs the skiff it is still rowable with the rig lashed off to one side.

I used some carbon on the inwales and some woven fabrics instead of chopped mat to achieve a weight reduction of about 13 kg over the standard layup. Ive also used some figured huon pine in transom, quarter knees, breast hook, gunwale batten and tiller. She has magnetic locking out riggers and some led nav lights and a custom metallised paint finish to match the mother yacht that she will be stowed on – a lovely addition to the fleet!
